A new face is joining the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s Head and Neck Cancer Center in Lake Success.

Dr. Bhupesh Parasharwas recently appointed as vice chairman of research for radiation medicine and co-director of the center.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Parashar to Northwell Health’s Department of Radiation Medicine,” said Dr. Louis Potters, chair of radiation medicine at Northwell Health. “Dr. Parashar is an outstanding physician who has extensive experience treating patients with the latest radiation medicine technologies as well as being a noted clinical and basic science researcher.”

Parashar, a radiation oncologist, said he has extensive experience with image-guided radiation therapy, high-dose rate brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery and specializes in head, neck, lung, breast, prostate and gastrointestinal cancers.

Every year, Northwell Health treats more than 16,000 new cancer patients, giving them access to the services of more than 200 specialists in more than 25 sub-specialties.

Parashar will also serve as an assistant processor of radiation medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Previously, he spent about 13 years in research leadership positions at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan and holds an extensive publication record for both clinical and basic science research with nearly 200 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and text book chapters.

Working closely with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory colleagues, Parashar will help design radiation medicine research and work toward the goal of translating their research findings into clinical trials to hopefully improve cancer outcomes, he said.

“We are continually striving to develop new cancer therapies, partnering with our own academic oncologists and clinicians and the world-class researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories,” said Dr. Richard Barakat, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. “The addition of Dr. Parashar significantly advances our cancer research capabilities in radiation oncology as we pursue new clinical trials and new cutting-edge treatments for our patients.”
