Readers Write: Contested elections in W.P. a sign of village’s health

The Island Now

I want to thank the Williston Times for its informative article providing information on upcoming village elections.

The article included the election date and an overview of the candidates.  Williston Park is gifted with an array of mature and qualified 2018 candidates.

At this time Mayor Ehrbar and the present village board run the village quite well.  Our streets are plowed, trees are trimmed, sidewalks are repaired, our waste is collected and the pool is beautiful.

Our taxes are a little high, but they give us the benefit of being independent and apart from being just one more area in the Town of North Hempstead waiting for snow plows to open our streets.

Mayor Ehrbar and the present board, that includes Kevin Rynne, all work for the good of the village, and that means you and me.

But, it is a healthy sign of “grassroots democracy” for Chief Gagliardi, Bill O’Brien and Chief Sais to offer their energy, experience and ideas to the Village.

They should have an opportunity and a forum to present their concepts to make our village lives even better.

Trustee Teresa Thomann has worked long and hard as a Trustee.  Her decision not to run for reelection, in my opinion, and that of many others, is a great loss to the village.  However, her desire to continue to work through the civic association is great.

In fact, it might be good for the association to schedule a Candidates’ Night where each one may present his thoughts and ideas to an interested citizenry.

I volunteer to work with Trustee Thomann for that and even moderate it if it can be scheduled I am needed.

Former village justice and former trustee
