Readers Write: Endorsing Brad Schwartz for open Council seat

The Island Now

As residents of the Town of North Hempstead’s 4th Council District, we are deeply invested in who will be appointed to represent us following Anna Kaplan’s election to the New York state Senate.

Therefore, we are writing today to unanimously recommend Brad Schwartz for the open council seat. We observed that while running his issues-based campaign for state Senate, Schwartz showed his sincere concern for every constituent he met. He galvanized statewide grassroots support while also earning the respect of elected officials and leaders across Nassau County.

Above all, Schwartz proved his commitment to putting the residents of his community first when he altruistically stepped aside from a potential primary race to allow Kaplan a clear path to victory in the state senate general election. He did so despite having built a formidable and well-financed campaign that could have proven a competitive primary match for Kaplan. Yet, Schwartz did not want to divide his party or drain much-needed resources from the end-game.

We need more elected representatives to act their values as Schwartz does, not grandstanding, not trying to win at any cost. His willingness to work as a team player is a breath of fresh air.

Schwartz’s selfless action and diplomacy demonstrated that he possesses the kind of character, integrity and temperament that is so needed in every level of government, especially now. This, along with his endorsement and support for Kaplan, helped the Democratic party finally win control of the New York state Senate. As a result, Kaplan’s Council seat now needs to be filled. We can think of no one better prepared than Schwartz  — and no one more worthy of our trust.

Schwartz’s genuine commitment is equally matched by his impressive grasp of local issues. He was born and raised in North Hempstead and attended Roslyn schools. So he has deep roots in our community and fully understands constituent values and needs. Meanwhile, his state Senate campaign further expanded his relationships and standing among community organizations, religious institutions, nonprofits and thousands of residents across our Town.

Consider that his campaign efforts have made Schwartz particularly well prepared to serve on our Town Council since state Senate District 7 fully encompasses the Town of North Hempstead. Schwartz spent nine months traversing our town and thoughtfully engaging with residents about the issues that affect them. Witnessing him over this period, we know that he is the best and most logical choice to serve the Town of North Hempstead.
