Readers Write: Katz will revive Great Neck Plaza

The Island Now

I have known Leonard Katz for over 20 years as a serious and civic-minded person. When I heard he was running for Mayor in Great Neck Plaza to help revitalize our deteriorating downtown I was only too happy to lend him my support. When I walk on Middle Neck Road I am dismayed and saddened to see the endless empty storefronts where once there was a vibrant downtown. What measures has the acting mayor and her trustees done to address this problem?

I was shocked when I learned that the Nassau County Board of Elections rejected the petitions of the Revive Great Neck Plaza party due to a technicality. It is a slap in the face to the hundreds of Great Neck Plaza residents that signed the petitions and are eager to see new faces with fresh ideas in the Plaza. Their petition was summarily dismissed because of a change of one digit, March 19 to March 18, as the voting date. Is democracy denied not because of anything substantial or consequential but because the original date on the petition had an incorrect voting date? Really?

I urge all Great Neck Plaza residents to join myself and others in this write-in vote for Leonard Katz representing the Revive Great Neck Plaza Campaign and his two Trustees, Robert Farajollah and Siu Lon Au on March 18th. Please take the extra effort to spell their names correctly, less they will use this as an excuse to invalidate your vote!

I can only imagine what two more years of this continued complacency with do to our beautiful stagnant downtown plaza.
