Readers Write: Mom-and-pop bakeries need your help

The Island Now

If you don’t wish to grieve the loss of these two fine mom-and-pop shops, please send your bakery business their way.

It’s simple economics.  Hardworking shopkeepers can’t pay the rent based on Thursday and Friday only bakery business. They have expenses seven days a week. That’s why we lost Benkert’s Bakery and many mom-and-pop shops as well.

It’s seldom talked about, but it’s a reality.  You can’t enjoy a  flourishing, prosperous downtown if you don’t agree to buy local with your whole heart and mind.

Visit Mr. and Mrs. Steiner at Steiner’s Pastry Shop at their new location in Port Washington  (formerly of Manhasset for 39 years).  They’ll much appreciate your visit and your renewed bakery business. It’s located at 148 Main St. in Port Washington; phone  612-9730.  Check out their famous blueberry muffins, chocolate chip muffins and meltaways.

And Louie of Sweet Temptations in Great Neck would love to see you again as well at  805 Middle Neck Road; phone  487-9048.  Check out the excellent banana bread or banana chocolate chip bread.  There’s nothing simpler and there’s nothing better.

Give the “little guy” – the honest, hard-working guy a break.  Mom-and-pop bakers are measuring ingredients and pounding dough at 4:30 a.m. to service you. Shop local and please remember to “Come Again.”
