Readers Write: Observant Jews are not the enemy

The Island Now

My father Rabbi Dr. Shamai Davidovics survived the Holocaust.

He didn’t just survive himself he used his trust in the master of the universe together with his university education –  his Ph.D. in philosophy, and 10 spoken languages, to fight the Nazis and save hundreds of Jews.

On one occasion as the Jews of his home Village were being rounded up onto the cattle cars, he stormed up dressed in a Nazi officers uniform and literally shouted and threatened in perfect German until they were all unloaded and sent home.

My father risked his life to save nonobservant Jews as well as observant Jews.

I am deeply offended and appalled that Mr. Markowitz would try to politically attack observant Jews – simply because they are observant Jews. I find it offensive that someone who is involved with a Holocaust memorial would attack people politically simply because they choose to observe the traditions of their parents and ancestors.

Mr. Markowitz – it is not observant Jews that you need to fear – but the ignorant who foment hatred against others for their belief and observance.
