Readers Write: Ombudsman idea no good for village

The Island Now

I do not understand why Ms. Gilliar has suggested adding a new position to the payroll of the Village of Great Neck, that of ombudsman.

The current mayor and trustees make themselves available to the public, allowing citizens to contact them directly via social media, e-mail, or telephone and by permitting open time for discussion during every Board of Trustees meeting.  There is no lack of opportunity for a citizen to voice his or her concerns.

Creating an ombudsman would add a layer between the mayor/trustees and the public, paradoxically making them less accessible. Isn’t it better to be able to contact our lawmakers directly?

That is why our current system works well — it is streamlined.

A vote for Ms. Gilliar is a vote for more bureaucracy, less efficiency, and wasted taxpayer dollars.
