Readers Write: Phillips silent on gender-identity legislation

Thank you for shining a light on Sen. Elaine Phillips’ despicable opposition to the Child Victims Act in your Feb. 16 editorial.

In short, Phillips will not support or even publicly discuss a bill that would extend the statute of limitations for sex crimes committed against minors.

I’m sure that comes as a shock to many of your readers, but it shouldn’t.

Complicity through silence is Phillips’ modus operandi.

Phillips has also been silent on the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act, otherwise known as GENDA.  GENDA would outlaw discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression in New York State.

Like the Child Victims Act, GENDA hits a GOP-erected roadblock whenever it’s sent to the state Senate for consideration, and Phillips has done nothing to remove that roadblock since she took office.

Phillips is convinced that her constituents will not hold her accountable for the failures of these bills if she just keeps her head down and her mouth shut.  We’ll see how her platform of inaction plays out on Nov. 6.
