Readers Write: Proposed property purchase, upcoming vote

The Island Now

Dear Community,

On Tuesday, Oct 26, 2021, the Board of Education is holding a community referendum about the purchase of the Sperry Building located at 2400 Jericho Turnpike.

This building is situated on a 1.5-acre property located directly across the street from our High School and would be used to create an expanded High School Campus.

The Board has created a new webpage to provide residents of the school district with factual information about this proposed purchase. This webpage can be found at the link below:

https://www.mineola.k12.ny.us/BOE/property_purchase_voter_information

On this page, residents can access the following information:

1. The Outreach Newsletter – This newsletter provides an overview of the details associated with the purchase, such as purchase price, location, property details, and a quick overview of the proposal to house our Synergy High School program.

2. Mineola’s Tax Levy and Bond Issue History – This document provides the history of the District’s tax levy and proposed bond issues going back to the early ’90s.

3. Capital Planning 2021-2026 Presentation- This is a copy of a Board of Education presentation from last March that highlights the history of capital improvements and proposed bonds going back to 1994.

4. Q&A with Dr. Nagler- Later this week, the district will be posting an additional video where I answer questions that I have heard from the Board of Education and the community. This Q&A will provide additional background on the documents posted above.

The vote is on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021.

Residents can vote at their local polling center either at Jackson Avenue School or at Meadow Drive between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Residents with questions are invited to email me at mnagler@mineola.k12.ny.us or deputy superintendent, Matt Gaven at mgaven@mineola.k12.ny.us

Michael P. Nagler, Ed.D
Superintendent, Mineola School District
