Readers Write: Protect Gutheil Lane from traffic

The Island Now

It is quite obvious that having cars enter and exit 777 Middle Neck Road onto Gutheil Lane will be extremely disruptive to everyone living along that quiet, dead-end street. It’s equally obvious that the owners of the 777 property don’t care about this at all. It is your job, Mayor Bral, and that of the other elected and appointed Village of Great Neck officials, to balance the needs and desires of all parties involved.

Ken Lee, an architect who happens to live on the block, has proposed turning the building around 180 degrees, so that the driveway faces south. I have another suggestion, which is to consider having the driveway facing Middle Neck Road, at the corner of MNR and Gutheil Lane. Because there is already a traffic light at this corner, it might be more likely than we imagine for Nassau County to approve this plan.

I realize that this involves a redesign of the building, but it will make the lives of everyone on Gutheil Lane a lot better. They will still have to suffer with the lack of sunlight, lack of privacy, and the general sense of congestion due to the presence of the building, but at least the cars won’t be exiting onto their very narrow street.

I urge you, Mayor Bral, to contact the appropriate Nassau County officials to see what they think of this possibility.
