Readers Write: Berkowitz personifies need for continued leadership

The Island Now

I am a graduate of the Great Neck Public Schools and my two daughters are graduates as well.

The reason why I wanted to move back here is because unlike many things in life that change, and not for the better, the school district has maintained its excellence since the days when I was a student.

Much of this is attributable to the continuity of leadership of its school board and administrators. My girls’ assistant principal was a fellow student with me, their dean of students grew up here as well, and some of their classmates are children of my neighbors while growing up.

People I know choose to live here because of the confidence they have that the district is in capable and caring hands, and that starts at the top, with the Board of Education.

The president of the board, Barbara Berkowitz, has guided the school district thru many trying times, such as 911, the microburst, and now, a pandemic. She has done so with a steady hand, good instincts, knowledge, and calm.

Our schools have continued to flourish and provide wonderful experiences for our children because of the continuity of leaders who have continued to serve even after their own children have graduated, because of how much they care for all children, not just their own. We are so fortunate to have Mrs. Berkowitz’s continued dedication to this community!

Remember to vote for Barbara Berkowitz on Tuesday, May 11.
