Readers Write: Welcoming Spring

The Island Now
Long Island Spring by Stephen Cipot

Here comes the rain.
Pattering on the roof,
Trickling through the trees,
Down into rich earth.

Not forgetting to tend the birdbath,
Filling it with enough non-glacial water—
The delight endlessly tossed, splashed about.

To all of us who remember
And are not sorry to see the end
Of cold grey days, Welcome!
Even clouds lighten and cast
Summer’s inevitable hues at sunset.

And daylight begins hanging around
Just long enough not to be easily forgotten.
Thankfully, like our best loves.

Then, I didn’t know much about anything
Till the time we first met, and at our best
Learned to bend dreams into complete circles
And entered them.

Our best dreams exude an awesome groundswell
Adorned green. This morning I’m sleepily
Coasting to brew some fresh coffee, winding
My way through the early face of spring.
Later let’s go for an easy hike in the woods.
