Readers Write: Sunset and Earth Tides

The Island Now
"NASA, by the crew of Apollo 8, December 24, 1968"

The earth lets out a reverent sigh
to close out each day.
The tides move the stones
of so many burdens back and forth,
washing away tears and silences.
But we know the diurnal cycles.

From the vast cold of a grey place
here the bluest diamond,
this we should know…

Our glances pass through moonlight
like ripples on a stream,
and the quivers of stars
offer nothing substantial.

Before night falls
and we return to the car,
I survey the rows of waves
one more time, and know
the circle of love is the true direction.
I insist.
