As promised by the Town of North Hempstead, the renovated Clinton G. Martin Park pool in New Hyde Park will open for the summer season starting June 30.
“We are elated that the newly renovated pool is completed in time for the 2018 summer season,” Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said in a news release. “I believe that the residents of the park district will be very pleased with their new facility.”
The pool, originally built over 50 years ago, had not been renovated since the 1980s. It was closed for the 2017 season for construction.
The pool is open to residents of the New Hyde Park Special Park District.
The renovation project ended up costing $23 million and replaced the infrastructure of the pool and its internal components, as well as updating the design.
The project, completed by the Wantagh-based Gramercy Group with the Syosset-based LIRO Group serving as the construction manager, also renovated the locker rooms at the community pool.
The new design includes more shaded areas, a new kiddie pool, a water slide, a spray pad, new pavement, a recreation room and new pickle ball and tennis courts, according to the news release.
“Our residents are looking forward to getting more than their feet wet in the new CGM pool,” Councilman Angelo Ferrara said in the release. “I am looking forward to celebrate the grand opening of the CGM pool this summer with Supervisor Bosworth and my fellow board members.”
When the project was presented last spring, residents were split on what it should entail – and cost.
In a survey of residents, about 65 percent of those who responded said the pool needed to be updated.
About 40 percent backed a $15 million plan that encompassed a full renovation, and about 24.6 percent supported a $9 million plan to revamp the aging infrastructure.
The district is made up of roughly 13,000 residents and covers North New Hyde Park, the Village of New Hyde Park, Garden City Park, Herricks and Searingtown. About 13.3 percent responded to the survey.
The town accepted a $19.4 million bid from the Gramercy Group, about $9 million higher than expected.
The project totaled $23 million because officials chose to include a refurbished pool entrance, tennis court upgrades and a storage building, according to Newsday.
The town will celebrate the opening on June 30 with a ribbon-cutting and kick-off celebration.
The town worked with members of the park district’s advisory committee during the planning and design phases, according to the release.
Marianna Wohlgemuth, a member of the park district advisory committee, said the facility will be ideal for families and seniors alike.
“Members of the Clinton G. Martin Park and pool district eagerly await the grand opening of our newly renovated pool and tennis courts,” Wohlgemuth said in the release. “How exciting will it be to have an added recreational room, completely updated locker rooms for men and women, reconfigured tennis and pickle ball courts, a splash pad and a slide included in the remodeling.”
Registration will take place at Tully Park from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The pool will be open from June 30 to Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and Aug. 18 to Sept. 3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
Registration costs range from $88 for a senior to $248 for a family.
Residents will be able to use the pool free on June 30, and early bird registration is extended till July.
The town is also offering a five-pass visit membership for $60 that can be purchased once per season per resident and cannot be used by guests.
