Ronald Sakowich won an uncontested election Tuesday night to be the newest member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department Board of Commissioners.

Sakowich received 180 of 184 votes cast. Three write-ins and one blank ballot were recorded.

“It was an uncontested race but people still showed up in numbers,” Sakowich said. “It says something about the community.”

He will replace Commissioner James Romagnoli on the board. He is the current president of Engine Company 2 and the president-elect of the exemption association, a branch dedicated to helping those that have been injured while serving. Sakowich is also a former fire captain.

Professionally, Sakowich is a licensed master plumber and has been in the business for 44 years since obtaining his license at 22 years old. He was born and raised in New Hyde Park, and his five grandchildren are now the sixth generation of his family in the village.

“I’m looking forward to being able to help the board with my experience in business and years of service,” Sakowich said. Bringing new ideas and leading the department to continued success is on his agenda, he said.
