Town to honor Black History Month

The Island Now

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, council member Viviana Russell, and the town board will once again host a celebration in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5:45 p.m. at the Yes We Can Community Center in Westbury.

The theme of this year’s event is “Migration,” celebrating African-American migration to the Town of North Hempstead.  The event will feature a special screening of the Town-produced historic documentary titled “Defining Moments: the Civil Rights Movement in North Hempstead.”

Several people in the film tell their personal stories of how they migrated from the South to Long Island and, more specifically, to the Town of North Hempstead for a better quality of life. The documentary was funded by a grant from the National Park Service and directed by NHTV Studio Director Alan Ginsberg. The film provides a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of how the soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement changed the word for the better, many of them living right here in North Hempstead.

The event will also include refreshments and live music and performances by the community.  In addition, Bosworth and the town board will be honoring the residents featured in the documentary.

The Yes We Can Community Center is located at 141 Garden Street in Westbury.  For more information, call 311 or visit www.northhempsteadny.gov.
