The Island Now

Clemson University

The following local students enrolled at Clemson University for the fall 2018 semester: C.J. Czarkowski and Jason Matthew Genzano of Port Washington, who are majoring in pre-business; Maggie Dailey of Mineola, whose major is packaging science; Isabella Eve Pirone, who is majoring in nursing; and Nikko Falcone of Manhasset, whose major is undeclared.

New York Institute of Technology

Jinal Patel of Mineola received the Friends of NYIT School of Architecture and Design Scholarship.

In a recent ceremony at the Crest Hollow Country Club, medical students from the NYITCOM Long Island (Old Westbury) campus received their white coats, a rite of passage signifying their official start in medical school. These students included: Ann Mary Hanna of Mineola, Alexandria Jaramillo of Carle Place, Vyshnavi Kodali and Priya Shahof of Williston Park, and Jensine Sajan and Saumya Valasareddi of Albertson.

Brian Hoerter of New Hyde Park was among the NYIT student-athletes who put up big numbers in the classroom during the spring semester. In all, 133 student-athletes achieved at least a 3.2 GPA last semester and were honored at the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll luncheon on Oct. 4, including Antonella Lopez AlcerroAshley Miller, Isabel TabetIvana AndricLaban KorirMartin SundellSamantha Melendez, and Samantha Frisina of Old Westbury, as well as Megan Mannle of Franklin Square.

The University of Vermont

Talia Levy of Great Neck has joined the university’s Honors College. Levy is one of 212 students to join the Honors College’s Class of 2022.

Over 250 first-year UVM students, led by 74 upper class leaders, began their University of Vermont experience as part of TREK, a unique, seven-day first year enrichment program sponsored by UVM’s Department of Student Life. These students included Jamison TuchEileen Brickell and Kristiana Kouvaras of Port Washington, who all participated in hiking.

Colby-Sawyer College

Colby-Sawyer welcomed 262 first-year and transfer students including Jordan Chin of New Hyde Park. Chin is majoring in business administration.

Hudson Valley Community College

The incoming freshman class at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY includes Karanjit Patwar of Mineola, who is studying biological sciences, and Matthew Depetris of Great Neck, who is studying business administration.

Bryant University

Douglas Demagistris, class of 2019, from Roslyn Heights, has been named to Bryant University’s Deans’ List for the spring 2018 semester.

SUNY New Paltz

Jessica Fox of New Hyde Park is on the SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team for the 2018 season.

St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University welcomed Patricia Buckley of Port Washington as a member of the Class of 2022.

Bard College at Simon’s Rock

New Hyde Park student Cayleigh Hughes earned early admission in the fall 2018 entering class at Bard College at Simon’s Rock after completing 10th grade, as did 11th grade Manhasset student Amy Liu and 10th grade Port Washington Student Julian White.

Belmont University

Sydney Behar of Mineola enrolled at Nashville’s Belmont University this semester as part of the University’s largest class yet.
