Representatives from 40 colleges and universities from across the country visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset recently for the school’s annual College Fair and Student Showcase.

During the hour-long performance, families and college reps got a chance to see the school’s talented dance, music and theater students. Performances ranged from song and dance solos to jazz ensemble pieces and theatrical numbers. They included members of the newly-formed Social Impact Repertory Company, the school’s acapella group, LIHSApella and selections from the Chamber Choir. Additionally, stylized exhibits of student artwork were put on display around the building.

After the performance, students and their families met with the college representatives, which included schools like Syracuse University, Marymount Manhattan College, the New York Institute of Technology, the Savannah College of Art and Design and several SUNY schools.

“We unveiled new repertory companies for the show,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker. “They were very well received. The turnout of college reps, along with students and their families, made it a full house and a very successful evening.”

“This event was a pleasant surprise,” said Letitia Stancu, a piano professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She accompanied her colleague, college rep Ryan Davila, to the fair at LIHSA. “This was my first time attending, and it’s wonderful to see the talent and passion of these students. They were enthusiastic and friendly and definitely college-ready!”

For 45 years, LIHSA has been a powerhouse for the development of Long Island’s creative and cultural sector, offering programs in Theatre, Dance, Music, Special Effects, Digital Media, Fine Arts and Film. LIHSA challenges current thinking and practice while producing graduates who are innovators and leaders. The school’s alumni are working all over the world on stage and screen, behind the scenes and leading major events and organizations.
