Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced Wednesday that the town has extended its emergency declaration an additional month to Tuesday, May 12, in response to the continued spread of COVID-19.

Bosworth originally declared a state of emergency on Friday, March 13.

“The extension was necessary due to the unfortunate, continuing spread of coronavirus in our community,” Bosworth said.

The emergency declaration enables the Town of Hempstead to implement public safety measures and quickly purchase items and services necessary to keep the community safe.

Essential services and the town’s 311 call center will continue to operate, although town facilities remain closed.

The town is waiving processing fees for online tax payments through May 11.

“Eliminating the online checking fee is intended to assist residents in staying safe during this period of social distancing,” Bosworth explained.

“Taxpayers should pay their taxes online on the Town’s website by ACH E-Check and take advantage of the fee waiver between April 1 and May 11,” Tax Receiver Charles Berman elaborated. “Paying your taxes from the safety of your home will help prevent the spread of coronavirus.”

Bosworth and the board of trustees have extended various building permits as well. Building and plumbing permits requiring the commencement of work within three months issued between Dec. 13, 2019, and March 13, 2020, have been granted a 45-day extension. Those requiring a project to be completed within two years issued between March 13, 2018, and March 13, 2020, have been extended 90 days.

Residents who wish to share ideas or concerns pertaining to improving town functions, facilities or programs can submit them from the recently launched online suggestion box, which can be found at northhempsteadny.gov/concern-suggestion.

“We recognize the importance of doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of our residents, and we want to do all we can to simplify your lives during this tumultuous time,” said Bosworth.
