In a rare step forward for athletics during the coronavirus pandemic, the Village of East Hills intends to reopen its tennis courts for singles play next week.

The village closed its Park at East Hills, which also contains village offices, a theater and a pool, early in March, but now plan for its six tennis courts to open Wednesday, May 27, following a resurfacing effort that may delay the opening.

Measures directed by the state will be followed, including rules for six feet of social distancing, no benches to congregate or sit upon, the bathrooms being closed, and other facilities not being open. Those waiting to play outside their cars must also wear masks.

To ensure social distancing, the village will take hour-long reservations on a first-come-first served basis, at most a week in advance, with the courts open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Additionally, only East Hills residents will be permitted to play, with no guests allowed.

The village also asks that requests be made at least 24 hours in advance of the anticipated  court time, and two reservations per week per person will be the maximum.

Players must also check in with the park attendant before entering the courts, must wear a cloth face mask until they arrive at their reserved tennis court, cannot walk to or visit any other part of the park, and must bring their own tennis balls.

The park’s restrooms and water fountains will also not be open. Please bring your own water, and dispose of the bottles or remove them when leaving the facilities.

East Hills Mayor Michael Koblenz implored residents to stay safe in the email announcing the opening.

“As we plan for the future, we ask everyone’s close cooperation,” Koblenz wrote. “The coronavirus remains extremely contagious. Please be careful.”

Reservations must be made by email to mangst@villageofeasthills.org, or by calling the park office at 516-484-9800. The village asks that the full name, address, email address and telephone number be given for each player.
