A Nassau County legislator helped first responders during an early morning house fire over the weekend.
Shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday, Nassau County police officers responded to a fully engulfed home on Kellogg Street in Oyster Bay.
The Oyster Bay, East Norwich, Bayville, Syosset, Jericho, Atlantic Steamers and Glenwood fire departments responded with 55 firefighters to extinguish the blaze.
Nassau County Legislator Donald MacKenzie (R-Oyster Bay) heard screams coming from the burning building across the street from his home. MacKenzie said he saw a man on the roof screaming for help, so he grabbed a ladder from his home and, with the assistance of Officer William Massari, helped the man to safety.
“The police were kind enough to mention my help and because of the position I hold I have received more attention,” MacKenzie said in a Facebook post about the fire. “But the volunteer first responders and police personnel deserve more credit. They are out saving lives every day.”
The homeowner, a 68-year-old male, suffered second degree burns and a 58-year-old male tenant suffered smoke inhalation. An Oyster Bay firefighter also suffered minor burns to his knees, arms and forehead.
MacKenzie thanked Massari and East Norwich firefighter Jessica Crowley, who was one of the first responders on the scene.
Officials have ruled the fire accidental.
