A man in his 50s appeared to try to jump from the Roslyn viaduct over Hempstead Harbor on Monday afternoon, police and a witness said.

A Nassau County Police Department spokeswoman said police got a call about a man attempting to jump from the viaduct, but said she could not confirm it was a suicide attempt and that police normally don’t comment on the topic due to its “sensitivity.”

“We got a call for a male who was attempting to jump off of the viaduct, but I don’t think he was successful,” a spokeswoman said. “He was taken to the hospital, but [the report] does not say much more than that.”

“They did take a person from the viaduct as an aided case to the hospital,” she added. “That’s pretty much all we really can say about it.”

One man, who was at the scene when police came but did not want to be identified, said the man landed in deep mud and was bloodied from his injuries.

He also pointed to mud caked on bars near the water.

The spokeswoman said a person was treated at the viaduct for injuries, but that “it wasn’t fatal.”

Asked if incidents like this were common at the viaduct, she said auto accidents occur “all the time” there but that she couldn’t recall any time in the last five years where police were called for “something of this nature.”

“I would definitely say it’s an uncommon incident,” the spokeswoman said.
