The Roslyn Board of Education recognized and congratulated students from the high school who placed in the Regeneron Science Talent Search at a meeting last Thursday.
Roslyn High School’s Lindsay Fabricant, Maya Rose Groothuis, Harshita Sehgal and Hailee Youn were named semifinalists for their research projects. Then Youn was named a finalist, the only student on the North Shore to achieve the distinction. Nineteen students from the North Shore were named semifinalists.
Meryl Waxman, president of the Board of Education, commended the teachers and parents for supporting students in the competition. “You don’t get great children like that without great parents at home,” she said. “Bravo and brava to all the beautiful families that support these scholars.”
Nearly 1,900 high school students across the country enter the competition each year with original research in scientific fields of study.
At the beginning of the meeting, Waxman, said, “I welcome everyone back to school this year with high hopes that the current issues that we may be dealing with globally come to a speedy end.”
During the meeting, thanks were given to the teachers who distributed at-home COVID-19 tests to those who requested them. “You greeted our community with warmth and encouragement,” Waxman said, “in the freezing cold, all together with the same warm smiles on your faces that you greet our children with in the morning.”
The meeting concluded with all items on the agenda and addendum being accepted. This included a list of personnel appointments, contract approvals, budget appropriation transfers and requests. The full agenda and recording of the meeting can be found at roslynschools.org.
