Roslyn Harbor grant lacks funds for LEDs

The Village of Roslyn Harbor is working to complete an initiative to install LED streetlights throughout the village with a state-issued grant but will need village funds to finish the project.

A $50,000 Clean Energy Community grant to the village is set to cover installation work and equipment on three village roads, village clerk Marla Wolfson said.

“The grant will pay to complete [installation of LED streetlamps on] Bryant Avenue, complete Dogwood Avenue and complete Motts Cove Road South,” Wolfson said. “There are still others in the village trustees could approve to do as well.”

Wolfson said to get the grant the village first had to spend its own money converting half the village lights to LEDs and the grant would cover some of the costs of completing the second half. The village spent $28,000 in February 2016 to install LEDs as part of a larger movement across Long Island to reduce long-term electrical costs for villages and towns.

Wolfson said the additional materials and installation for the village would add $16,905 to the project, plus an additional $2,000 if trustees opt to continue plans for LEDs on the flagpole and lamp post at Village Hall.

Roslyn Harbor received the designation for completing four of 10 high-impact clean energy actions identified by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority as part of the Clean Energy Communities initiative.

Trustees still need to vote to approve the LED placement.
