Roslyn High grad creates a ‘Camp From Home’

The Island Now

While quarantine due to COVID-19 continues through the summer, children may still have the chance to attend a summer camp.

Marisa Radulescu, 19, a student at Cornell University and former Roslyn High School student, came up with the idea to create “Camp From Home.”

“I was looking for something to do, as the internships, I was applying for were getting canceled, said Radulescu, “That’s when I noticed that a lot of summer camps were getting canceled and I decided that I wanted to make a safe outlet for kids not able to go to their favorite camps this summer.”

Camp From Home is a program for kids of all ages that offers “small-group camp sessions” for less than 10 people right in your own backyard.

The camp makes sure to follow strict CDC guidelines in order to provide the best experience for children and families. “Masks and gloves are encouraged,” said Radulescu, “but are not required if the campers are at a safe social distance.”

During these sessions, activities are created based on the children’s age and interests. From Zumba classes to crafts to Tik Tok activities, the possibilities are endless!

Camp From Home isn’t Radulescu’s first business venture, as she has been in charge of her business, “Lotions and Potions,” for the past four years.

Through this business, she planned and carried out countless events where children and teens could make their very own beauty products. Now, she currently runs the contactless camp with the help of Paige Schultz, who will also be a student at Cornell University this fall.

It’s also important to note that Camp From Home can also be offered through Zoom if parents are uncomfortable with in-person interactions.

If families choose to do this option, the camp will drop off any necessary supplies at the participants’ doorstep. “They will get these materials and we will be with them over Zoom to help guide them through these activities.”

Radulescu also strives to make Camp From Home a program that parents are proud to sign their kids up for. She works hard to make sure that the camp goers and families are satisfied with their experience, as well as feeling safe.

“I work to cater to all families that want to access Camp From Home,” she said. Feedback from parents and attendees is extremely important to me, as it will help make Camp From Home better and better!”
