Despite the dirt piled across the Roslyn High School parking lot, construction will be finished and the lot will be ready for the first day of school, officials said.
The district’s director of community relations, Barry Edelson, said all projects from the $40 million capital plan expected to be finished before the start of the 2017-18 school year will be completed, including the high school parking lot.
“It will be finished this week,” Edelson said. “We start school next Tuesday, and that’s our deadline for everything, so it will be done.”
During a Roslyn Board of Education meeting in June, KG&D civil engineer Courtney Riley said the majority of the parking lot work could be done without a permit, but the district was waiting for a Nassau County permit for curb work and painting along the Round Hill Road right-of-way. Edelson said those permits were received and the work, including crosswalk striping, will be finished.
Edelson also said a new gymnasium at the high school will be finished this fall, likely within a few weeks.
At Harbor Hill Elementary School, Edelson said work on the parking lot will be finished on time as well as a new multi-purpose room and work inside existing classrooms and hallways.
“Harbor Hill Elementary School is in very good shape,” Edelson said. “The new multi-purpose room is about ready to go, their parking areas will be finished, and all the classroom spaces will be done.”
The Harbor Hill fields are expected to be completed next spring.
“It takes a long time to finish them and seed them and let them get ready again,” Edelson said. “It takes a season.”
At Harbor Hill, one of the three baseball fields has been removed from the scope of construction and one of the two fields will be outfitted for softball games along with the planned Little League field. There will also be a high school-sized lacrosse and soccer field alongside two U11 soccer fields that could be divided into as many as six fields for smaller children.
“Not every project will be finished because not every project was expected to be finished before school starts,” Edelson said. “Some projects will go into the school year, but everything that needs to be done to open school will be ready and safe.”
