A basketball coach who worked with students in the Roslyn school district outside of school hours has tested positive for COVID-19, according to an email from Superintendent Alison Brown.
“Several concerned parents in our district have reached out to let me know that a basketball coach who has been training several of our Roslyn students outside of school has tested positive,” Brown wrote.
She did not reveal the name of the coach or the age range of the students who worked with the coach in the Jan. 21 email.
“If your child participated in this training and was in close contact with this coach (10 minutes or longer inside, without precautions such as masks and social distancing) I ask that you keep your child home, get your family tested, and observe quarantine guidelines,” Brown wrote.
She added that the district did not want the case, “which has the potential to be a superspreader event, to impact our schools in any way.”
“We have worked very hard to be able to offer in-person learning, and would be devastated if a factor outside of our control put our schools at risk,” Brown wrote.
The district has been critical of superspreader events in the past, most notably when over 100 Roslyn High students were reported to have attended a party in August, just weeks before they were scheduled to return to classes.
“Cases in our community are rising,” Brown wrote. “The remainder of the winter months will be challenging. Now is the time to remain vigilant and work together. If your child is experiencing any hint of a symptom, please keep them home until you know for sure that they are healthy.”
As of Wednesday, official counts from Nassau County state that 338 cases occurred in Roslyn Heights, 276 in the Village of East Hills, 95 in the Village of Roslyn, 67 in the Village of Roslyn Harbor, 61 in the Village of Roslyn Estates, and 44 in Greenvale.
In messages sent to parents from Brown over the past week, 23 students and 18 staff members in the district were revealed to have tested positive.
“None of us is as powerful as all of us,” Brown said. “Let’s stick together and do what’s right for everyone. Brighter days are ahead, we just have to hang in there a little longer.”
