The Roslyn Robotics Team is incredibly proud to have successfully hosted a Southern New York State VEX Robotics Qualifying Competition at Roslyn High School on Dec. 15. In attendance were 23 teams from 13 schools/programs around Long Island and Westchester County.

Forty-six qualifying matches were played on three game fields at two minutes per round. These rounds included a 15-second autonomous task followed by driver-controlled alliance game play. It was a fast-paced, exciting experience for all involved and everyone who attended. Each team, including Roslyn’s own, started the day with an interview by a panel of experienced members of the robotics, engineering and science communities. Questions included how they went about the design process, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame these challenges as a team. After qualifying rounds, final rounds were held by the top 16 teams to determine a winning alliance and those teams that will move onto the NY State Final Competition. Other awards were given to teams that showed excellence in various categories.

The Roslyn team, which was established last year, has 12 students  – Truman Chong, Joshua Flashner, Daniel Flyer, Jerry Hu, Joshua Kim, Ryan Kim, Makenzie Komack, Melanie Landesberg, Alex Liu, Harris Miller, Olivia Viruet Quintero and Justin Schiavo – who have designed, built, and programmed their robot to compete at various locations around Long Island. The game for each year changes and therefore the robot that would be best at completing those tasks that will help them win the game must change as well.

The Roslyn Space Turkeys, a Roslyn Lego Robotics team comprising middle and elementary school students, volunteered to set up the event the evening before as well as the day of the event. Roslyn DECA provided volunteers to keep the school store open for visitors to purchase snacks and drinks while volunteers from Science National Honors Society helped to build the fields, organize teams during the event and break down the gym at the end of the day. Jason Lopez and Roslyn’s entire technology department, high school and central administrators and Roslyn’s custodial staff all contributed to the effort.

The advisors for the Robotics Team are Olivia Kaplan and Lisa Spyridon, and Denise Tretola, Lauren Murphy and Erin DiGiuseppe.
