Roslyn’s Adrian Tsui and Mikey Weitz took fourth place in the state high school tennis doubles tournament last weekend in Flushing, losing by four points in a semifinals tiebreak set to the eventual champions.
It was their first time playing in the tournament and they got farther than they expected, Tsui said.
They placed first in the county on May 18.
“After we won counties we told everyone also we were going to rep Roslyn and do really well at states, so to actually pull through with that and do really well, it was amazing,” Tsui said.
The pair played five matches over three days, eventually losing in the semifinals and then losing a match that determined third and fourth place.
“As we kept going we started playing better and then there were also harder matches,” Tsui, a graduating senior, said.
Tsui and Weitz lost the first set of their semifinal match 6-1. But they won the second 6-4.
“When we won the second set it was kind of like OK, we’re in this, we can still win this,” Tsui said. “We lost the first set really badly. After the second set we both got really hyped up.”
The third round was 6 all, which led to a tiebreak set. The Roslyn pair lost it 7-3.
Being so close to beating the eventual champions, a pair from Scarsdale, was frustrating but also gratifying, Tsui said.
“It was good to know we could have won the tournament,” he said.
Tsui will head to Rider University in New Jersey in the fall to play Division I tennis. Weitz, a sophomore, has a couple years left in his high school tennis career.
