Sands Point residents looking to build a dock for their home will have to wait a little longer.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the village Board of Trustees extended a moratorium for an additional six months on all applications, approvals and construction of docks, floats, piles and boat lifts.
The moratorium was put in place last fall so the village could examine its code regarding waterfront construction.
“We have been working on looking at our shoreline very closely, of which there are many, many miles in Sands Point,” said Mayor Ed Adler. “We’re getting closer, but we do need at least a few more months of time before we’re ready to introduce changes to our existing code.”
The moratorium passed unanimously, although two trustees — Marc Silbert and Peter Forman — were not in attendance.
The other big item for discussion was a possible proposal to prevent flooding in New York City. The village had received several letters expressing concern over the city’s consideration to build a “sea gate” that would close Long Island Sound at the Throgs Neck Bridge and prevent a storm surge — like the one during Superstorm Sandy — from flooding the city.
“We’re quite concerned about this because if storm surge cannot be relieved … that could potentially mean flooding tide situations here, in New Rochelle, this whole area could have that much worse flooding,” Adler said.
Other communities along Long Island Sound had expressed concern. Adler said the village and other North Shore communities would continue to follow the project.
The board also passed a resolution that allowed the Helen Keller National Center to hold its annual Helen’s Run/Walk in May, and a resolution soliciting bids for chemicals to maintain the golf course at the Village Club of Sands Point.
