The Port Washington school board on Tuesday approved a resolution to accept a $10,000 donation to purchase a scoreboard for the new multipurpose side field at Paul D. Schreiber High School.
The money was donated by the James B. Thomson family, along with the Port Washington Vikings Baseball Booster Club.
“This has helped us tremendously, and we’re happy to have this support and get support of parents of team players,” said Georgine Hertzwig, treasurer of the Port Washington Vikings Baseball Booster Club. “It’s a donation to the school district, not just the baseball program.”
The $10,000 donation, which was made in the name of James B. Thomson, was made by his widow, Adrian Thomson.
The development of the new field was part of the $70 million capital project bond voted on in March 2015.
“We’re very excited about this, and very grateful for this generous donation,” said Karen Sloan, the school board president.
Hertzwig said the booster club will raise money for windscreens in front of the dugouts and a sound system for the field.
“We’re ecstatic that Adrian, a longtime Port Washington resident, gave such a wonderful donation,” Hertzwig said. “And we’re very thankful.”
Stephanie Joannon, director of health, physical education and athletics, said the district hasn’t discussed what type of scoreboard to get, but it is grateful for the donation.
According to a summary of the bond, the district allotted $4.95 million for athletic fields, including replacing the turf at the Whitney Field, renovations to the infields on the Guggenheim fields and a fix to the irrigation at the Manorhaven fields.
