Joyce Chen, a senior at Paul D. Schreiber High School, has been named a winner for her artwork in the Shianti Fund’s 13th Anniversary 2019 Peace Calendar.

The Shianti Fund, a Long Island-based charitable organization, has committed to enlightenment and peace through education for more than 20 years.

This year, the organization’s peace theme is “Peace and Non-Violence.”

Joyce’s artwork focuses on a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian independence movement. The quote compares the entirety of humanity to the enormity of the ocean— “a few bad people do not have a measurable impact on the entirety of humanity, nor do a few drops of dirty water taint the cleanliness of the ocean.”

In addition to the publication, Chen will also receive a $1,200 scholarship for her artistic efforts.

Whenever a Port Washington student is acknowledged for artistic talent, the Port Washington Union Free School District recognizes the outstanding mentorship and guidance provided by the district’s art teachers. With Chen, the district applauds art instructor Miranda Best.

In promoting the arts and its importance to a well-rounded education, the district is grateful for the continued support of Schreiber’s building and central administrations, the Board of Education, and the greater Port Washington community.
