Book Tasting at Willets Road School

The Island Now
Fifth-graders at Willets Road are exploring new novels, writing book reviews and compiling a list of new books to read.

On Wednesday, November 21st, during the new Willets Road Humanities Block, fifth-graders “sampled” various books of different genres to expand their reading interests at the 2nd annual Book Tasting. Book Tastings are a way to get kids engaged in reading and familiarizing themselves with a wide variety of genres such as fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, graphic novels and mystery, just to name a few. As the students moved from table-to-table, they explored new novels, rated and wrote reviews, and compiled a list of new books.

This unique lesson created by fifth grade teachers Marguerite Immordino, Kim Lynch, and Jessica Liakonis and co-teacher Stephanie Anderer as well as teaching assistant Ann Clemente, reading specialist Staci Roseman and ENL teacher Ashley Wong sparks, motivates and excites students’ literacy.
