Students at John J. Daly Elementary School in Port Washington recently explored a new take on fitness to discover the drummer within themselves during “Drums Alive,” a fitness program that combines fitness, drumming, music and educational concepts to improve physical, emotional and social health for students.

Generously sponsored by the Ed Foundation, the “Drums Alive” program offers students an amazing brain and body workout while enhancing their musical appreciation and drumming skills.

Throughout the program, Daly’s fourth and fifth-grade students arrived early to school at 7:15 a.m. eager to practice their rhythm and movement with drumsticks and exercise balls. Under the direction of physical education teacher Mike Killoran, students practiced drumming to the beats of “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons and “We Will Rock You” by Queen.

Daly hosted a building-wide culminating event for the student musicians to showcase their talent acquired over the last few weeks.

“Drums Alive,” an evidence-based fitness program, offers an effective way to help children learn through movement, awakened intuition, reduced stress and aggression while increasing creativity and physical fitness.
