Five from Great Neck take home sign language awards

Five Great Neck students received awards through the 2018 Long Island Language Teachers annual contest, sweeping the American Sign Language – or ASL – Song Interpretation Video category.

Annie Park of South High School won the gold medal, Alexis Namdar of North High School won the silver medal, and Spencer Horowitz of South High School took home bronze. Madison Kokhavim and Ariella Edelman, both of North High School, received honorable mentions.

Kathy McAleer is the ASL teacher at both North High School and South High School.

Members of the Long Island Language Teachers organization include teachers and supervisors of World Languages, English as a Second Language or ESL, and American Sign Language across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The Long Island Language Teachers group was established in 1980 to promote and advance second-language instruction on Long Island and in New York State.
