Sixth graders at Floral Park-Bellerose School recently took part in a cooperative game during physical education class that tested their communication skills.

Led by physical education teacher Colleen Martin, students were broken into teams of seven and challenged to “cross the river” (gymnasium floor). During the first round, each team was given six “rocks” (plastic discs) and one “boulder” (an aerobic step) to get their members across the gymnasium floor. During the second round, each team was given one less piece of equipment and asked to complete the river challenge again.

As students attempted the “cross the river” challenge, they had to avoid “alligators” (bowling pins) placed on their route. They also had to make sure that no one touched the floor. Ms. Martin said the lesson was a great way for students to practice their communication skills, build upon their ability to work as a team and learn how to strategize as a group to achieve success. It also reinforced her Word of the Week, honesty, as students recognized that if they faltered and touched the floor, they had to start the challenge over again.
