Ms. Commons’ fourth grade class at South Salem Elementary School is kick-starting the school’s new “book buddies” program. The fourth grade class will be partnering with the South Salem first graders to help them with their reading and writing skills. As book buddies, the older students will read books with the younger students to help the first graders better comprehend the vocabulary and pronunciation.

This new program is part of the district’s collaboration initiative to get students to work together and to learn how to successfully communicate knowledge and information. The book buddies program promotes mentoring skills in the older students while offering the first graders a valuable learning experience with positive role models.
