The Long Island Regional Science Bowl champions, a five-member team from South Middle School, competed in the National Science Bowl competition on June 5. The team from South Middle was one of only 32 teams from across the entire country to advance to the National Science Bowl Elimination Tournament.
Team members Colin Hu, Luke Huang, Emily Tsui, Erin Wong, and Zican (Arthur) Zhang won the regional Science Bowl competition at Brookhaven National Laboratory on January 30. Due to the pandemic, subsequent rounds of competition were conducted via Zoom.
The South Middle team adapted well to the new digital format and qualified for the National Science Bowl Elimination Tournament following their successful performance in the National Science Bowl preliminary tournament, conducted online on May 23.
In Science Bowl, teams are put to the test in a fast-paced, question-and-answer format featuring a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The top 32 teams from the national finals earned an invitation to the National Elimination Tournament.
The South Middle Science Bowl team is coached by Diane Caplain, a biology teacher at South Middle, and Tobias Hatten, Science Chairperson and Earth Science teacher at South Middle.
The Department of Energy National Science Bowl (NSB), established in 1991, is one of the nation’s largest science competitions. This year, 44 middle school teams and over 250 students competed in the national event, which brought together the top teams from the 48 regional tournaments held across the country.
