Great Neck North Middle School has been crowned Division II Champions in the 2018–19 Vocabulary Bowl, sponsored by vocabulary.com.

The year-long competition concluded with North Middle at the top of the Division II leaderboard. This year, North Middle students mastered 176,020 new words — more than double the number of words North Middle participants mastered during the 2017–18 Vocabulary Bowl.

North Middle students learned the most new words of any middle school (grades 6–8) with 500–999 students, thus earning the Middle School Division II Championship title. “The Blazers took a commanding lead early in the season and held strong until the end,” reads an announcement on the vocabulary.com website.

In addition to their Division II title, North Middle placed fourth nationally out of all middle schools that competed in this year’s competition, and thirteenth overall out of more than 40,000 schools representing grades K–12 in the United States and Canada.

The Vocabulary Bowl is a competition in which students master new words to score points for their school. North Middle’s participation in the Vocabulary Bowl is organized by Cinthia Raffo, English/reading department head.
