Great Neck schools announce virtual summer enrichment, summer recreation programs

The Island Now

The Great Neck Public Schools Summer Enrichment and Summer Recreation programs are pleased to offer a variety of educational and engaging summer courses using a new, interactive, virtual format.

Both Summer Enrichment and Summer Recreation programs will run from July 6 through July 31, during the hours of 8 a.m.–1 p.m. Students can take up to three enrichment workshops and two recreation workshops a day.

A complete catalog of summer offerings is available on the district website at www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/summer. Online registration is currently underway.

Summer Enrichment Program

GNPS Summer Enrichment offers a series of week-long virtual workshops for students entering grades 2–9, as well as select few courses that will run for the entire four weeks.

During the one-week workshops, students can explore new skills and concepts over the course of five days. Courses will be available in the visual arts, drama, math, science, reading, writing, history, current events, health, technology, music, life skills, and more.

Additionally, there will be courses geared specifically toward helping middle school students find success as they transition into sixth and seventh grade in September. Programs for incoming middle school students include: Becoming a Sixth Grader, Becoming a Seventh Grader, Sixth and Seventh Grade Summer Reading Assignment Workshops, and Introduction to Sixth Grade TC Writing and Reading Workshops.

Courses scheduled to run the entire four weeks include middle school math (grades 6, 7, and 8), enrichment math (Intro to EP Math 6, Intro to Pre-Algebra, and Intro to Algebra I), Earth Science 8, and a brand new Intro to Spanish workshop intended for students entering grades 5–9 with no previous knowledge of Spanish.

Further, elementary staff will offer several academic preview and enrichment opportunities for students entering grades 2–5. Programs in math, reading, writing, science, and other areas of creative exploration are designed to give students a preview of what they will be learning in September. New elementary electives include Summer Book Club, Travel Journalism, Virtual Museum, and Animal Awareness.

Summer Recreation Program

The GNPS Recreation Department is working with district teachers and other providers to offer a slate of online physical activity courses that will feature live, synchronous and interactive instruction for up to 60 minutes before and after the online Summer Enrichment courses, which run 9 a.m. to 12 Noon.

Recreation courses will meet on an every-other-day basis for the duration of the four-week summer program, for a total of ten sessions per course. Offerings are individual in nature, require little or no specialized equipment, and are targeted to the interests and abilities of different age groups. Activity themes include Yoga, Cardio Bootcamp/Kickboxing, Tai Chi, and Dance. The Recreation Department aims to offer programs for students grades K–2, 3–5, and 6–8.

Families may enroll in as many different weeks as they want, subject to availability upon registration.
