Theresa Walter, an English teacher at South High School, has been selected by the New York State English Council as a recipient of the Educator of Excellence award.

Ms. Walter is one of eighteen individuals to be recognized by the NYSEC as a 2019 Educator of Excellence. She was nominated for this award by a former student and a parent from North High School.

Ms. Walter has been teaching in the Great Neck Public Schools for the past 20 years, including 14 years at North Middle, four years at North High, and two years in her current position at South High.

She is a National Board Certified Teacher, having achieved a nationally-recognized advanced certification for demonstrating excellence and leadership as an accomplished educator.

Ms. Walter is also a recipient of the 2019 Christa Fulton Memorial Teacher Award, which is awarded annually to two GNPS educators who have made a positive impact on the lives of students.

Educator of Excellence awards are presented annually by the New York State English Council to recognize excellence in teaching. Educators are nominated by their colleagues, students, or school community members, and then selected by the Council.

Ms. Walter will be honored during an awards luncheon at the annual NYSEC conference on Oct. 18.
