The Herricks Public Schools’ Denton Avenue Elementary School celebrated Health and Wellness Week at the end of January. This annual series of events and activities feature an emphasis on physical activity, nutrition, self-care, and positive choices.

The festivities kicked off on Jan. 24 when Slim Goodbody presented an assembly in the gymnasium that focused on the importance of overall health. The week that followed included nutrition workshops, Little Lotus Yoga sessions, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, “Protecting the Brain” strategies, a teddy bear clinic, dental health lessons, Bal-A-Vis-X workouts and more. Several medical professionals visited as guest speakers and educators.

On Jan. 30, Professional Boxer Cletus Seldin visited the school and engaged students in the upper grades in exercise. He taught them how to use the equipment and gave them a chance to try some safe moves. The sessions also incorporated boot camp-style athletics that involved push-ups, jumping rope and other drills that tested agility and strength.

Another highlight of the week was the fourth annual Health and Wellness Night, which was held on Jan. 29. Workshops led by Herricks staff and community members brought children and their parents together for family fun that fostered healthy lifestyles.

Participants explored areas of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing through activities associated with nutrition, first aid, kindness, self-esteem, balance, yoga, communication skills, CrossFit, triathlon training, anatomy and much more.
