Herricks High School’s homecoming celebrations brought the district and community together Oct. 25 on the updated athletic facilities. While this year’s game did not result in a Highlanders victory on the scoreboard, homecoming is always a winning set of events as Herricks pride and school spirit shine.
The new and improved turf field and bleachers, unveiled at last year’s homecoming, were filled with blue in honor of the home team. Before the Highlanders kicked off against Sewanhaka, a community barbecue provided late afternoon enjoyment for fans and families.
The band performed throughout the evening while the cheerleaders and spectators rooted for the Highlanders. The halftime show continued the high school’s time-honored tradition of presenting the homecoming court. With the cheerleaders standing on the sidelines to create a walkway, nominees from the senior class crossed the field two by two amid rounds of applause. Dylan Doton and Mary Tsahas were crowned the 2019 homecoming king and queen.
Halftime also featured a special tribute to beloved longtime Herricks High School substitute teacher Doug Nuccio, who passed away recently. A plaque was presented to Mr. Nuccio’s family on behalf of the district and Assistant Principal Andrew Frisone reflected on the positive impact he made on countless Herricks students and staff members.
The buildings were filled with school spirit earlier in the day as well, and an afternoon pep rally at the High School celebrated athletes, various student groups and the Class of 2020.
