On Sept. 25, senior members of the Herricks High School Model United Nations Club attended the World Leadership Forum at the Harvard Club in Manhattan. Students were given the opportunity to listen to esteemed panel speakers which featured prominent economists, esteemed US ambassadors, and published authors.

The first panel, titled Word from Wall Street, featured leading economists Brendan Greeley, Michael Hanson, Gregory Daco and Abby Joseph Cohen. The group discussed current global economic status and the probability of an imminent recession.

The next panel, China’s Grand Strategy, featured New York Times Bestselling author Sarwar Kashmeri regarding China’s rise to economic dominance via the Belt and Road Initiative. Several students had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Kashmeri personally about his latest book, China’s Grand Strategy: Weaving a New Silk Road to Global Primacy.

The first all-women panel moderated by the Foreign Policy Association featured Robyn Meredith, Dr. Alexis Crow, and Ceyla Pazarbasioglu. The speakers discussed fiscal responsibility and global economic outlook. Viren Sehgal and Andrew Liu took the opportunity to ask questions to the panel regarding heightened US-India relations and their effect on dampening China’s economy and reorganization of supply chains back to the US.

Lastly, Frank G. Wisner, a former US Ambassador to India, updated the group on the socioeconomic effects of the crisis in Kashmir. Rohan Gupta discussed potential strategies for avoiding Islamic State strongholds in the Kashmir with Mr. Wisner.

Overall, the group had a great time and looks forward to attending the event next year.
