On Feb. 11, two small chamber ensembles from Herricks High School performed as semi-finalists in the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society’s Young Musicians Program competition. The regional semi-final concert was held at the Tilles Center and featured 13 ensembles, representing seven high schools from Long Island.
Genesis Kang – violin, Timothy Kim – violin, and Brendon Lau – viola, performed the charming second movement of Antonin Dvorak’s “Terzetto.” Justin Koe – cello, Kyle Pinzon – cello, Chiara Tan – piano, and Justin Yang – cello, performed the hauntingly beautiful “Requiem” by David Popper.
Each group selected to perform in this concert was given a coaching session by a roster artist from the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society prior to the concert. The Herricks students had the opportunity to work with renowned cellist, Estelle Choi.
“Chamber music is such a unique and special genre of music, because it requires so much of the students individually, and also forces a level of collaboration and compromise in working with others that is rare in students of this age level,” said Herricks High School orchestra director Catherine Fish. “To be able to give a professional-level performance like these students did is no small feat! We look forward to hearing the results of the final round of the competition.”
