Second graders in Lauren Stillman’s class at Hillside Grade School recently brought their study of communities to life by making 3D replicas rural, urban and suburban communities.

In social studies, students have been learning about different types of communities and how to differentiate between them based on their features and how people live. The second graders were then broken into groups and instructed to use their knowledge to create a specific community.

The cross-curricular projects integrated social studies and art as well as the collaboration skills learned from Project Lead the Way, and the engineering and design process learned as part of the science curriculum.

The students were excited to show off their projects and dressed like people who would reside in their respective communities, including police officers, doctors and bakers.
