It was an evening chock-full of celebration when the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District Board of Education gathered for its June 10 meeting.

The festivities began with newly elected board trustee Kathryn Canese being sworn into office. It continued with New Hyde Park Memorial PTSA co-presidents Danielle Messina and Liz Sollecito presenting awards to former New York State Sen. Elaine Phillips and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Morrison for their support and leadership to remove polling from schools. Sollecito then presented Messina with the Advocate of the Year award.

Manor Oaks School fourth graders, who placed first in the Odyssey of the Mind competition on May 28, performed the skit they developed for the contest for all in attendance. Led by Odyssey Enrichment teacher Dominique Dunn, the students’ script focused on generating solutions to a problem they have not seen before and included “Leonardo da Vinci.”

Two students from the district’s Math Enrichment program also presented projects at the meeting. Danyal Alimosa-Saud shared his research on comparing costs in different cities, while Clayton Yu discussed his exploding dots research.

Members of the board granted tenure to eight district teachers. Congratulations to Hillside Grade School teachers Joan Carlucci, Peter Halligan and Lauren Stillman; Garden City Park School’s Tamara Chyi and Dena Zornberg; and New Hyde Park Road’s Teresa McHale, Janine Marques and Christine Talbot.
