New Hyde Park Road School sixth-grader Emily Wong is now a known artist in her local community. Emily was named the winner of the district’s calendar cover contest and was recognized for her talents at the board of education meeting Sept. 9.
Her artwork, based on the theme “Innovation,” appears on the cover of the 2019-2020 school calendar, which was mailed to homes throughout the district. Emily’s design features images of cogwheels, lightbulbs, tools and other objects over a rainbow-colored background, along with inspirational words such as “Create,” “Invent” and “Think.” She created her drawing using pencil, pen and colored pencils.
Superintendent Jennifer Morrison presented Emily with a certificate, extra copies of the school calendar and her framed original drawing. Dr. Morrison noted that the theme was based on the district’s motto, “Innovation Coupled With Tradition.” She said that among “so many beautiful submissions,” Emily’s piece really stood out.
