Led by its Student Council, John Lewis Childs School in the Floral Park-Bellerose School District raised $3,483.86 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Long Island chapter during its Pennies for Patients campaign.

Student Council members, under the guidance of adviser Kelly Zullo, encouraged their peers to donate their loose change throughout the months of April and May. The group made daily announcements, created videos for the district’s Facebook page and collected contributions every day when students arrived at school. They also tracked grade-level contributions. At the conclusion of the collection, pre-K students and kindergartners were treated to ice pops for collecting the most money for this important cause.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society campaign manager Kerianne Stein visited the Student Council students on June 24 to thank them for their contributions. Ms. Stein explained to students that the money they raised helps fund research and provides support to the families of loved ones with blood cancers. She also extended her gratitude to the school’s students for raising almost $15,000 for the organization in three years.
