The Manhasset Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Vincent Butera honored the district’s varsity fall and winter athletes for their individual and team accomplishments during a special recognition ceremony held in Manhasset Secondary School’s Black Box Theater in April.

Highlighting the evening were the Nassau County champion boys and girls cross-country squads as well as the recently crowned Nassau County champion varsity boys basketball team. Boys varsity basketball coach George Bruns was also applauded for recently being crowned Newsday’s Long Island Coach of the Year after guiding the Indians to the Long Island Class A championship and their first trip to the state semifinals since 1986.

The board recognized 10 student-athletes from both the boys and girls cross-country squads who qualified for statewide competition and another 13 who qualified for states from both the boys and girls varsity swim teams.

Also receiving special recognition were 11 members of the boys and girls winter track teams who achieved All-Long Island honors, including All-State, All-Federation and All-Long Island runner Angeline Caamano.

Manhasset Director of Physical Education, Interscholastic Athletics and Health Services James Amen was on hand to introduce the team and present the students with certificates of excellence.
